Arees Well – Al-Khatam Well (Ring Well)

Arees Well – Al-Khatam Well (The Ring Well)

Arees Well – Al-Khatam Well (The Ring Well) this well is attributed to a Jewish man called Arees, i.e. the peasant in the language of the People of Syria. In Sahih Muslim, it was narrated that Abu Mousa Al-Asha’ari had ablution in his house and came out, saying: “I will accompany the Prophet (PBUH) today.” He came to the mosque and asked about the Prophet (PBUH).

They said: “He went this way.” He said: “I went out asking about him, until he entered Arees Well. I sat down by its gate, which is made of palm fronds, until the Prophet (PBUH) completed his need and had ablution. I stood up for him, and he sat in the center of its edge, uncovered his legs, and dangled them down in the well.” He said: “I gave him the greeting, then I sat by the gate and said: Today, I will be the gate watchman of the Prophet (PBUH). Abu Bakr Al-Siddique, God bless him, came over and pushed the gate, and I said: Who is this? He said: Abu Bakr. I said: Take it easy. Then I went to say: O Messenger of Allah, this is Abu Bakr seeking permission. He said: Permit him and give him the tiding (good news) of Paradise.

He said: Then I said to Abu Bakr, God bless him: Enter, and the Prophet (PBUH) gives you the tiding that you will go to Paradise. He said: Abu Bakr entered and sat down to the right of the Prophet (PBUH), said the greeting at the edge and dangled his legs, as the Prophet (PBUH) did, and uncovered his legs. I came back and sat down, leaving my brother to have ablution and join me. I said: If it is God’s willing to bestow bounty on (so and so), he would bring him in. Then a man moved the gate, and I said: Who is this? He said: Omar bin Al-Khattab. I said: Take it easy.

Then I came to the Prophet (PBUH), offered greeting, and said: This is Omar seeking permission. He said: Permit him and give him the tiding of Paradise. I returned to Omar, God bless him, and said: Enter, and the Prophet (PBUH) gives you the tiding that you will go to Paradise. He said: He entered and sat down with the Prophet (PBUH) at the edge, to his left, and dangled his legs in the well. Then, I returned, sat down and said: If it is God’s willing to bestow bounty on (so and so) (meaning his brother), he would bring him in. A man came over and moved the gate.

I said: Who is this? He said: Uthman bin Affan. I said: Take it easy. He said: I came in to the Prophet (PBUH) and told him. He said: Permit him and give him the tiding of Paradise with an ordeal that will hit him. I came back and said to him: Enter, and the Prophet (PBUH) gives you the tiding of Paradise, with an ordeal that will hit you. He said: He entered to find out that the edge was filled, so he sat down facing them from the other side.

Shuraik said: Sa’eed bin Al-Musayab said: So, I interpreted that their graves will be in the same arrangement. In Sahih Al-Bukhari, Anas was quoted as saying: “The ring of the Prophet (PBUH) was in his hand, in the hand of Abu Bakr, then the hand of Omar.” He said: When Uthman sat on Arees Well, he took the ring out, and tampered with it, and the ring fell down. We stayed three days with Uthman, emptying the well, but we couldn’t find it. The fall was six years from taking over as Caliph.

It had some of the secret in the ring of Solomon (PBUH), when his reign as king terminated by losing it. When Uthman lost the ring, things went against him, and people revolted against him. That was the beginnings of disorder to the end of time. No traces of this well nowadays.
